Materials

what they’re made of

Every material, chosen on purpose

Every material in a Steffie’s shoe is chosen for a specific job. Dr. Steffie selects them herself, often in person on sourcing trips. Here’s the full list, with what each one does and why it earned its place.

RoamFoam™ EVA midsole

EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is the cushioning foam used inside running shoes. We use a higher-density version that holds its rebound through years of wear, not just the first few outings. This is the piece that replaces the rigid plastic core inside a conventional heel, absorbing shock all day long.

Suede upper

The upper is soft, fine-grain calf suede. Suede is forgiving. It molds to your foot from the first wear, which is part of why there’s no break-in period. It also takes color beautifully, from the champagne shimmer of Palace to the warm pop of Lava.

Leather lining

The inside of the shoe is fully lined in soft leather, chosen because it breathes, so your feet don’t feel sealed in even at hour eight.

Insole

The insole is the same soft leather as the lining, cushioned underfoot and built right into the shoe. It isn’t a removable insert. It’s part of the shoe itself, and it sits directly over the integrated metatarsal pad, so the support stays exactly where it belongs.

Outsole

The outsole is solid rubber with linear grooves running the length of the sole. The grooves shed water on slick sidewalks and add quiet grip on marble floors. Rubber gives you wear life that synthetic outsoles can’t match.

Heel structure

The sculpted wedge is a single piece of dense EVA bonded to the leather covering of the heel. There’s no metal shank and no plastic core. Without those unforgiving materials in the way, the foam wedge is free to do what it does best: absorb and support.

Hardware

The micro-buckle and clasp on our ankle-strap styles are chosen to hold up against skin contact and travel without tarnishing. The clasp itself is borrowed from ballroom dancing shoes for quick on-and-off transitions, and the micro-buckle is kept minimal to elongate the line of your leg.

Where they’re made

Steffie’s are made in Dongguan, China, by a small, family-run factory partner with deep experience in women’s comfort footwear. Dongguan is so central to the industry that it’s often called the footwear capital of the world. Every pair is hand-finished with the kind of detail you can see in our stitch density, buckle alignment, and metatarsal pad placement.

Care and longevity

Even the best materials reward a little care. A few minutes a month, plus proper storage, keeps a pair looking new for years. Even the hardest-on-their-shoes among us have found that a pair lasts well over a year with almost no care at all. Our care guide covers suede, leather, and the metallic finishes.
